The Isle of Wight is known
as 'The Garden Isle', not surprisingly when
you visit the Botanical Gardens at Ventnor, where many rare and exotic plants
can be seen. These cannot thrive anywhere else in Britain due to our
exceptionally mild climate.
Here on
the Island we have history stretching back millions of years. Also known as
'Dinosuar Island', though not because of
the residents!. There are several dinosaur museums, Roman villas - historical
links to Charles I, Queen Victoria, Lord Tennyson to name but a few. Science is
well represented too with Marconi and his wireless transmissions, Sir
Christopher Cockerell, inventor of the hovercraft and John Milne and
seismograph.
"And what about the kids?", we here you
say. Apart from just about every water sport you could think of, there's theme
parks, smuggling musuems, a wax works, adventure playgrounds galore, ghost
walks, Sandown Zoo, you name it, the Island has it!. So don't worry mum and
dad, if the weather is not right for lazing on the beach, although rare here on
the Isle of Wight, there are plenty of things to see and do indoors.
And if that was not enough - a 10 minute trip by hovercraft from Ryde
takes you to the National Maritime Heritage city of Portsmouth with Nelson's
flagship HMS Victory, the Warrior and Henry VIII's flagship the Mary Rose, the
Submarine Museum, Gosport and of course the D Day Museum and Marine Aquarium on
Southsea promenade. There is something for all the family to enjoy, at this
great location for your holiday.
